Upstander Program

The UPSTANDER PROGRAM

Upstander LogoThe UPSTANDER PROGRAM is a curriculum designed to engage students in a meaningful, relevant conversation about negative social behaviors that lead to bullying within their school. This is accomplished through interactive workshops that provide education and promote team building and advocacy for the issue.  A total of eight workshops are conducted on a monthly basis over the course of a school year.  These lessons facilitate the development of leadership abilities, critical thinking skills, and provide training in methods of effectively intervening in a bullying situation.

The primary goal of Upstander is to bring the issues of bullying to the forefront of the student's social consciousness through empowerment and self-reflection.  This task is completed by providing the students with appropriate strategies and knowledge that enables them to be proactive in bullying situations.  The knowledge gained from each lesson helps to reduce the incidence of 'bystander syndrome;' a key element that allows situations to escalate into more dangerous conflicts.

A secondary goal is that participating students will be inspired to devise new ways of spreading the message of tolerance and inclusion throughout their schools and communities.

Topics of curriculum include:

· Courage- “Do I have the courage?”

· Responsibility- “Does it matter to me?”

· Judgment- “You be the judge”

· Diversity- “Each of us is unique”

· Bullying- “Bullying 101”

· Bystander vs. Upstander- “The Bystander Effect”

· Peer Relationships- “Make the Change”

· Action and Advocacy- “Spread the Message”
